Trauma-informed Practice for Healing Practitioners

All healing practices are fundamentally about the process of human change – about restoring the wholeness of being in a balanced way and providing conditions for growth. To do that safely, all practitioners have the responsibility to recognise different forms of trauma and know how to respond when the trauma is ‘activated’.

Recovery orientation and trauma-informed care is an Australian national strategic direction for all health practitioners, established as a requirement in 2013.

Trauma-informed care acknowledges the prevalence of trauma throughout society with awareness and sensitivity to different forms of trauma. It is a strengths-based approach focused on rebuilding a sense of empowerment. It sees trauma not simply as a past event but as a formative one that may contribute to one’s current state or circumstances. To be trauma-informed is to understand clients and their symptoms in the context of their life experiences and cultures, with an appreciation that some symptoms may represent efforts at coping.

This workshop will give you the essential principles of working with others in a trauma-informed and recovery-oriented way. You will learn:

-       The principles of trauma-informed care

-       What creates safety

-       How to prevent re-traumatisation

-       To recognise when the trauma is ‘activated’

-       How to support a person in trauma recovery

-       To recognise limitations and know how and where to refer.
